Blown Out

Monday, April 14th, 2014

The little PM River is a lot bigger after our area received 3-7 inches of rain in the past 36 hours. The first picture is from Sunday afternoon at Upper Branch Bridge on the Pere Marquette after it had rained all night.

The water was already high, then by Sunday morning it was really high. Sunday started with birds singing and the sun shining and ended up being a beautiful day. Then the rain started again about sunset and kept going until morning.

The second picture is again from Upper Branch Bridge 24 hours later. In the first picture take note of the first post with the rock, because in the second picture that post is gone. My guess is that the PM went up about 4 feet in a day and remember it was already really high before it came up 4 more feet.

pere marquette river fishing report- April 1st

Tuesday, April 1st, 2014

The fishing over the past week has slipped from near great back to ok but all indications are that things will quickly improve again.

One indicator is that the PM is on the rise with recent warm weather and rapidly melting snow, rising water always brings new fish. We’ve also heard that lots of steelhead are being caught through the ice at the river mouth, telling me that there is a big push staging to head up. Another is that I’ve been boating a ton of super fat pre-spawn hens, that look like their ready to jump on gravel. Lastly is that the calendar is right for the big spring migration.

Water levels are high and dirty and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the river blow out and over the banks, even without rain. My tips would be to fish big and bright and make sure your on the bottom.

We landed a male the other day that had one of those perfect rose colored cheek patches, I could’t help but take a bunch of pictures of him.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- March 23rd

Sunday, March 23rd, 2014

The fishing was very good for the first half of last week but then slid down to ok for the weekend. Probably the combination of declining and clearing water with a colder weather system that moved into the area.

Steve said he’s been doing well on stoneflies while everything in my net has been on eggs. Though I’ll have to fess up that I haven’t been giving them many other options.

I’m expecting fishing to improve with warmer weather that will not only warm the water but add some more run off to the river.

monster brown on the swing

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014

Steve hit the lower river last week, just after the ice broke up. Possibly because they were one of the first boats through that stretch in months but they had an awesome day, landing many, many steelhead and a 31″ brown.

While Steve has landed many larger browns trolling in the big lake and on lures in the river, this is his personal best on a fly and better yet it came on a streamer.

Steve says the streamer was copied from a friend, Greg Senyo. The fly is called Artificial Intelligence and was in Green Goblin color. Steve says the Artificial Intelligence has become a favorite  steelhead streamer.

Steve wanted me to also pass along that he has fallen in love with the Cortland, Compact Switch saying, “It’s the only line I’ll use for swinging.”
