Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- March 17th

Thursday, March 17th, 2016

The PM has been fishing well the past week. Warm weather and recent rains brought a big bunch of fresh steelhead up from Lake Michigan. These new steelhead were dearly needed as our winter fish had  spawned early and headed down, I’m sure the pre and post spawn fish high-fived as they passed or maybe a low-one is what fish do.

It raided all day yesterday and the river is on the rise but it doesn’t look like it’s going to get out of control and should make for some good fishing for the weekend.

I can guarantee that I’ll be fishing 12 pound and big bright stuff until at least next week.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- December 10th

Thursday, December 10th, 2015

Steelheading on the PM has remained consistent with a couple fish in the net with a day spent on the water. Anyone who lives in the region knows that the weather has been very mild, making it unusually pleasent to be outside for December.

Water levels and clarity are just about perfect. I still don’t have a good feel for how many new steelhead moved from the big lake into the river following the recent high water.

The water downstream from Indian Bridge is still where you want to be. Why we aren’t getting many steelhead upstream of there is still a mystery. Are most of this falls steelhead stocked fish from the Big South Branch? Are 90% of the steelhead simply being harvested before they can make it through the first 30 miles of the PM?

While there is almost never a time when eggs don’t produce steelhead, there are times when they will take almost nothing but eggs. Over the past few weeks I’ve been impressed with how many steelhead we’ve been hitting on the swinging. Good stuff.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report – November 15th

Monday, November 16th, 2015

The leaves are off the trees and the frost is on the windshield and the steelhead fishing on the PM River has clicked another notch. I wouldn’t say that it is great but certainly a solid “okay”, bordering on good.

I haven’t thrown anything but eggs but did work an outing recently with another guide that is top-notch when it comes to streamers. They had little success swinging but we got into fish on eggs. It looks like everything is late this fall so maybe the steelhead just aren’t off the egg bite yet.

The river is a little below average and getting pretty clear again.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report – October 29th

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

The salmon peaked late on the PM River this fall. Why? Who can know for sure but it has been unseasonably warm and dry which are two conditions that have been known to delay a fall run and this year it seems to have pushed them back about two weeks.

Thanks to hurricane Patricia things have changed overnight. It rained all day yesterday and the mercury has dropped significantly and from time to time I can hear sleet hitting the windows. Only a steelheader could be thankful for this change in the weather.

More steelhead are hitting our nets each day and this gray wet weather should only help bring more into the system.

Water conditions are still slightly below average with just a touch of color. All of my steelhead have been on eggs, which makes sense due to the fact that I haven’t fish anything else.
