Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- March 30th

Monday, March 30th, 2015

I would love to report an upswing in the fishing but it just isn’t the case. Like the weather, the fishing has taken a slight turn for the worse. Probably a combination of winter-over fish completing their spawning and hitting the road back to Lake Michigan and cold water temps that have also been dropping and clearing.

In a week we’ve went from about perfect water levels and color to getting low and clear. We’re hearing reports of new fish in the lower river but unfortunately they haven’t made an appearance upstream yet. With this lingering winter weather it’s understandable to not see many spring fish, the good new is, they should be right around the corner.

Walt Grau reports doing well on smolt patterns, his best nymph the past week.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- March 23rd

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

A few weeks ago the jet stream finally shifted north, allowing southern warmth to move across the Midwest. This shift turned our area from tough winter to pleasant spring overnight, we saw a temperature swing of over 70 degrees (-20 to 50’s) in a few days. Because it had been so cold, for so long, it still took a few days for the PM to thaw and open enough to float boats.

The first flies into the river after the thaw were greeted with aggression from eager steelhead that probably hadn’t seen a fly for months. For winter fishing, it was very good but unfortunately it didn’t last long. With a lot of snowmelt trickling into the river each day, the water temps have remained cold.

This past weekend showed the first upswing in fishing with many groups of steelhead jumping on gravels, most of these are probably winter-over fish. We’re hoping that these winter fish will be replaced with a nice big batch of fresh spring chrome. Conditions are right for enticing steelhead to head-up-river with April just around the corner and higher water moving into Lake Michigan, water that is infused with all that good spawning scent.

Again the water temps are still cold but in the Flies Only through Walhalla stretch the river is just about perfect as far as level and color. I don’t have a reliable report from the lower river.

A few steelhead are being caught on streamers but the majority have been on eggs.

Steelhead caught on the PM River Michigan

Pere Marquette Fishing Report- April 26th

Saturday, April 26th, 2014

As many expected the steelhead fishing on the PM turned red hot after the flood waters receded. Oddly, the upper river near Baldwin is now low and clear while the middle around Walhalla is still high and dirty.

It’s light leaders, small eggs and nymphs near Baldwin and big and bright lower down. If your on foot, wading is still a challenge in many areas down stream of the Flies-Only.

There are a lot of drop-back hens moving through the system with spawners still around. Steve reports that the Flies-Only area has lost a lot of steelhead over the past few days.

It’s been interesting to see the rearrangement of log jams throughout the river and other changes that the high water brought. It’s hard to believe that the water was nearly 5 foot higher a week ago.

Blown out update

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

The first 3 pictures are all of Upper Branch Landing on the Pere Marquette and were all taken in the afternoon on 3 consecutive days of our flood. You can see that the water is feet from where it started after day one of the flood.

They say it may actually reach an all time record, we’ll see in a few days.

The 4th picture is also of Upper Branch Landing, showing the canoe landing side. You might see that the canoe rack has just entered the main stream and is about to float away.

Shots 5 and 6 are of Lower Branch Bridge, take note that the water is hitting the Bridge! My favorite though is of the rapids through the trees in the last photo.

We drove to Baldwin for dinner and up there anyway the river appears to have now creasted and has receded a few inches.
