Third Coast Fly

The fishing was very good for the first half of last week but then slid down to ok for the weekend. Probably the combination of declining and clearing water with a colder weather system that moved into the area.

Steve said he’s been doing well on stoneflies while everything in my net has been on eggs. Though I’ll have to fess up that I haven’t been giving them many other options.

I’m expecting fishing to improve with warmer weather that will not only warm the water but add some more run off to the river.

This has certainly been a tough winter for most of us and with waist deep snow and many parts of the river froze solid, there was just no fishing on the Pere Marquette to report.

Thankfully, the past several days have warmed to almost spring like conditions and winter’s icy grip on the PM relaxed enough for folks to wet a line. As it should be the river rewarded those willing to swim through snow and drag boats over ice for some reasonably hot fishing.

Walt and another guide friend landed 3 out of 5 steelhead in about 4 hours of fishing and the best part, they were all on streamers. Of course they didn’t have a camera, so the shots below are from Walt and I hitting the river over a month ago.
