Friday, April 10th, 2015You gotta love that first steelhead and the second, especially when it’s twice as big. Kathy’s success was a direct result of her being an absolute natural at drifting a two handed rod. Kathy’s husband is Ian Anderson from FlyMasters and Warmwater Chronicles.
Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- April 8th
Wednesday, April 8th, 2015I’m happy to report better fishing on the PM. It looks like some fresh fish have finally found their way upstream. There are a few fish on gravel, a few fresh fish in the pockets near gravel and a few drop backs in the holes. Combined there are an ok number of fish to be found. I’m hoping and thinking that this will be the start to better things to come. We have to remember that Lake Michigan still has ice floating around.
Water temps are in the 40’s with the upper river getting clear and a bit of color in the mid sections. Water levels are around average.
The photos below are from a double trip with Steve yesterday where Jeff landed his 1st, 2nd and 3rd steelhead ever. I love the first photo, typical of a new fly fisherman to always want to grab the reel handle and stop a running fish. I can just here Steve, “don’t touch that reel”.
Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- March 30th
Monday, March 30th, 2015I would love to report an upswing in the fishing but it just isn’t the case. Like the weather, the fishing has taken a slight turn for the worse. Probably a combination of winter-over fish completing their spawning and hitting the road back to Lake Michigan and cold water temps that have also been dropping and clearing.
In a week we’ve went from about perfect water levels and color to getting low and clear. We’re hearing reports of new fish in the lower river but unfortunately they haven’t made an appearance upstream yet. With this lingering winter weather it’s understandable to not see many spring fish, the good new is, they should be right around the corner.
Walt Grau reports doing well on smolt patterns, his best nymph the past week.
