Pere Marquette fishing report -May 1st

We’ve been having some technical difficulties here at Third Coast headquarters. Sorry for the delay.

As mentioned last Friday, we had some super high water here and set new record highs for the Scottville gauge for late April with flows over 2000cfs.  But by Saturday the upper river was already back in good shape.  The middle river is still clearing and the lower river will not be cleared up for several days if not a week or more.

The upper river was in bad shape on Thursday but Gabe still managed to hook a steelhead and catch a few nice browns stripping streamers. The upper river was in great shape yesterday with a very dark tannic stain but good visibility.  There were good numbers of fresh steelhead both Saturday and Sunday. No telling how long they’ll last but another cold snap today and tomorrow will help and we’ll hopefully keep getting a trickle of fresh fish until the water drops.  Hot orange egg flies have been doing well for steelhead.

The trout fishing is very good and should be great as the weather continues to warm.  Zak was up from Indiana and fished big streamers and smolt patterns with me yesterday and rolled a lot of fish, probably one every three or four minutes.  Unfortunately only a couple stayed hooked and none of the big ones, but it was some great fast action.  White and natural Zoo Cougars were the go to fly.  The action was really hot from 7:30am to about 10:30 and then slowed way down as high winds moved into our area.  We still turned several fish, but nothing like the morning hours.

But the egg bite was super throughout the day and while we didn’t land any big trout, all the ones we did catch were fat little egg eaters.  Also some pictures from Steve’s trips last week with Tom, Doug, and Brian who did well on steelhead with heavily parr marked smolt patterns.

We still have some great dates open for trout fishing in May.  Before he leaves for Beaver Island, Steve has May 6, 8, 13, and 14 open.  Matt’s open dates for May are 3-6, 9-13, 15-20. We’ve got great hatches this month and fantastic streamer fishing.  Come on up and experience some of the Pere Marquette’s excellent trout fishing.
