Dick Walle

While reading the latest newsletter from the Great Lakes Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers Kevin was surprised to learn that his friend and client Dick Walle passed away earlier this winter. Dick was an active conservationist, excellent fly fisherman, and accomplished tier.

Kevin guided Dick and a friend to victory many years ago in the Pere Marquette Watershed Council’s One Fly Tournament. Dick put on an absolute soft hackle clinic. He was well known for his soft hackle patterns and was extremely proficient in the art of fishing them.

Dick and his wife Judy floated the PM with Kevin last April for steelhead. It was one of those perfect, shirt-sleeve Michigan spring days. The steelhead were active, the river was cold and clean, but best of all, the company was good. Below is a picture of Dick holding a steelhead from that day. Dick is wearing his signature hat, though you can’t quite see the hundreds of flies stuck in the thick fleece band.

Dick will be missed by the many people that he knew and befriended and by the natural resources that he worked to protect.
