Fabio on Beaver Island

Friday, July 13th, 2012

You might remember Fabio from here or here or even here.  Well he decided to give Beaver Island a try and had a great time.  Fabio brought his friend Fernando who was visiting from Brazil.  Fernando is a professional judo instructor, I asked if he could give a demonstration with Austin in the restaurant parking lot but Austin didn’t want to.

Austin sends the following:

Being a fishing guide you get to meet a lot of people, in my years doing this I have never fished anyone from out of this country.  That is until last week.  Fabio and Fernando from Brazil made it up to Beaver and all that they wanted was smallmouth and smallmouh they got.

Big numbers of fish in two days with almost a 1/2 dozen doubles had them laughing and smiling the entire time. I have never had a couple of anglers so enthusiastic about every fish that they caught. These two Brazilians instilled what fishing is about, enjoyment.

The Morlock Flats Jig: Jigging for Carp on Beaver Island

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

This past year I collaborated with Gabe Hillebrand of Hill Brand Tackle to come up with a custom jig to target carp. The results were great. Here’s a selection from his blog:

“As we approached an archipelago of small rock pile islands, Steve cut the motor and we glided into position. With rod in hand, I stood on the bow scanning the 3-4 foot deep water for carp. All of a sudden I spotted them: four, all tail up, feeding on the bottom. I cast well beyond their position and ripped the new Morlock Flats Jig just under the surface, stopping so it would swing right under their nose. Jig out of site I felt nothing… not even the bottom. Suddenly my instincts bucked. My rod swung up and the line threw a spray of water as it tore through the glass-like surface of the lake. My reel whizzed as the hooked carp fled for the skyline. What a rush!”

Also, thanks to Gabe for the one of a kind experience at Stony Acre.  You’ll have to ask Gabe if you want the story.

Popping flies for bass

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Morgan Sherburne recently wrote an article for the Petoskey News that includes information on northern Lake Michigan smallmouth fishing and specifically Beaver Island.

By the end of a winter of steelheading, my enthusiasm for large, anadromous trout has usually significantly waned. I’m tired of being cold, wet and skunked… Read More.

FocalFish recently featured an article by Cameron Mortenson from The Fiberglass Manifesto about his trip last summer to Beaver Island.  There is some great photography with the article.  Click here for a link to the article.

Beaver Island is only 28 days away!
