Carp Fly Swap 2014

Friday, February 21st, 2014

More than a month ago I got an email from Fly-Carpin inviting me to join in their annual carp fly swap. Honored to be included with many of the biggest names in carp fly fishing, I obviously said yes.

Last time I tied up a big batch of my jumbo Bunny Craws and sent them off. While I knew the fly would be too big for many of the carp destinations where they would end up, I wanted others to see the size and style of flies we’re using here.

This year I wanted to send something that most of the other people could use and maybe even catch a carp with. My choice was the Quick Craw, a fly that fits the standards of a classic carp pattern.

My daughter was nice enough to arrange the “marching army of craws” for the picture.

Frankenstein Sculpin by Steve Martinez

Monday, January 20th, 2014

Recently Steve headed down to Schultz Outfitters as their invited tier for the weekly Bar Flies Event.  They shot a quick video of Steve tying one of his Frankenstein Sculpins that works so well on Beaver Island’s carp and smallies.

Austin’s Salmon Fly

Thursday, October 10th, 2013

This is a pattern that Austin had very good luck with this fall. He said that it fished well both on the swing or drifted on a tandem egg rig. Something about the blue and white really seemed to piss them off.

Hook- TMC 5263, size 4.
Body- One white and one blue marabou palmered.
Head- One mallard flank.

New Carp Fly, Adduci Carp Sucker

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Austin has came up with a new fly that he calls the Carp Sucker and I’ve got to admit that it has caught some fish on a couple tough days. Austin likes this fly for shallower (1-3 foot) cruisers and sun bathers. He keeps the fly on the bottom and moves it relatively slowly with short and quick strips.

Materials In Tying Order:
Hook- TMC 200R in size 4.
Eyes- lead eyes in large yellow.
Tail- grizzly marabou in sand.
Body- leech yarn in amber.
Collar- grizzly marabou in sand.
Head- any pink synthetic dubbing.
