Pere Marquette Fishing Report- Sept 26th

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

While the PM is again low and clear it is fishing slightly better.  We’ve been getting new fish in small batches.  There is still time to keep fingers crossed for a late versus a small run for 2012.

As we keep saying, the key is stealth, sneak-in with a few good casts and you’ll likely be rewarded.  My best fly today was a two inch black Woolly Bugger we named “Black Magic”.

Steve went one for two on steelhead today!

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- September 20th

Salmon fishing on the PM River has improved mightily since last week, the rain really did help.  While I wouldn’t consider the fishing to even be normal for this time of year, with some effort and skill, your going to get into salmon.

Rains brought the river up to normal!  And it now has a bit of color.

The lower river still has fish moving through, while the middle and upper sections have pre-spawn and spawning fish.

With conditions still on the low and clear side, low light periods and stealth are key to success.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report- August 22

Steve sends the following:

The Pere Marquette salmon run is starting and like what always happens this time of year, knowing where to float and fish is the name of the game.  There are fish in most stretches with some having more than others but the upper sections have varied more from day to day.

For trout, start getting your indy nymph rigs ready.  The kings will start working gravel soon (already seen some worked) and nymphing behind these worked areas will start paying off.

Pere Marquette River Fishing Report -March 7th

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Crazy weather and very good fishing.  The Indigo crew was in Chicago for the weekend but a few phone calls confirmed that the lower river was literally jumping with steelhead.  Even curmudgeonly guides like our buddy Walt Grau were excited about the fishing.  Walt said they lost one of the biggest steelhead he has ever seen and if you know Walt, he always pessimistically underestimates fish.  So somewhere on the PM there is a beast steelhead, maybe a 20+?

The fishing upstream, while not as hot as the lower river, is still very good.  There are steelhead on gravel, in holes, taking on the drift or hitting swung streamers.  The spring black stones are out and imitations are taking fish.  Walt says his best streamer has been a Walt’s Wobbler in blue, orange, gold and black.
