Michigan Mousing

Went a little crazy with this one, but rowing down the river in complete darkness throwing mammal flies is a little crazy too.

Pere Marquette fishing report -July 31

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Mousing is still the name of the game on the Pere Marquette. We’ve half heartedly thrown hoppers a couple times over the past week with very little to show for it. But we’ve been mousing hard and with the low, clear water, warm daytime temps and cool nighttime temps, the mousing has continued to be very good. While we didn’t get another steelhead or huge lake run brown over the weekend, we got into some nice trout.

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at mousing or just do it from a boat instead of walking in, conditions should be good for at least the next week barring any heavy rain. Drop us a line, Indigo Guide Service would love to take you fishing: matt [at] thirdcoastfly [dot] com

Pere Marquette fishing report -July 26th

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The fishing has been so good here on the Pere Marquette that I just can’t not put up another report. I’ll make it quick. Mousing mousing mousing. Very cool last night. Air temp dropped to 50 degrees by 2am and the water temp in the upper river was 64. The first fish was respectable. The second was very high quality. The third was an absolute upper river freak. Stray lake run? Probably. Does it matter? Nope.

Pere Marquette fishing report -July 24th- part II

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

So Jeff never got a big brown on a mouse. You can see the average fish he landed below. Not a bad fish, but not the one you’re looking for after dark throwing mammals. But that’s fine, because he did catch a steelhead. On a mouse. In late July.

This fish grabbed the mouse and immediately ripped upstream at about 100mph and right away I knew it wasn’t a brown. It jumped several times in shallow water and almost beached itself twice. Jeff did a great job fighting her and got her to the net in less than a minute. I’m guessing it was a random summer run. The ultimate bonus on a mouse. Nice job Jeff.
