Pere Marquette fishing report -October 23rd

Still decent numbers of kings around in the middle river but they’re definitely thinning out. Cohos are still around in spots but they too are thinning out. But we got a great push of steelhead over the past several days with the high water and the steelhead fishing has been great. We’ve been fishing mainly 8 and 10mm trout beads in orange (not sure the exact color) and in one of Steve’s custom painted “dead egg” schemes and the steelhead have been taking them on the first or second good drift.

The river came up pretty high and peaked Saturday night/Sunday morning at some point at nearly 900cfs at Scottville, but it never did get muddy, just a nice stain. Though we received more rain last night so we’ll see how things shape up over the next couple days. We should continue getting a good push of steelhead while the river remains high.

We’ve hooked many steelhead over the last several days but have only landed a few. Water temps are still pretty warm for this time of year and the fish are hot and hard to handle. So we haven’t got too many good pictures, but here’s a good one Kevin took of a chunky fish last Friday.

News Update Friday

  • Our April fools joke from last year was apparently still generating LOLs in mid-September. Yep, I said “generating LOLs.”
  • The fishing here on the Pere Marquette is on fire. There are gobs of very fresh king salmon around and there are officially gobs of steelhead too, just need to find them. Kevin’s boat went 5 for 16 yesterday on steelhead fishing beads. And there was only one person fishing! Steve hooked a coho on a popper yesterday. ON A POPPER. Indigo Guide Service has a couple openings for this coming week if you’re looking to book a trip.

more musky

Speaking of muskies (muskys?), Third Coast reader Hamid Mir sends the following report:

“Saw the Zero2Hero movie this past summer and it inspired me to go out and get one. Got this on a 10wt with a big fire tiger streamer and a 400g sink tip. Maxed out my Boga at 30lb and was around 52”.”

And check out the Stealthcraft. Awesome report Hamid. Thanks for sending it our way.

The Season: Klamath river steelhead

This has been making the rounds lately. Hard to imagine that the Klamath had the 4th largest salmon and steelhead runs in the world so recently.

contest giveaway extravaganza

As you know, we have a copy of Musky Country: Zero2Hero in our possession. And as you also may recall, we’re going to give that DVD away. Contest as follows:

One of Kevin’s clients caught an average male salmon about ten days ago. At first glance, there’s nothing too special about it, but upon closer inspection, this salmon is extremely weird. This fish exhibited something that none of us here at Third Coast Fly and Indigo Guide Service had ever seen before. We’ve seen it with dogs, but never salmon.

So click on the image below and take a good look at the full size picture and send us an email with the subject line “salmon contest” that includes your guess as to what makes this salmon so special and how it might have happened. Best “how it happened” story takes the DVD. And the “how it happened” story can be as creative as you like or you can make a compelling argument for how it really might have happened. Up to you. The story that strikes our fancy is the one that takes the DVD. So it’s pretty much random. But it’s worth a shot. Musky Country: Zero2Hero is a great movie.

Send your stories to matt [at] thirdcoastfly [dot] com Deadline is Nov 1st.
