Gary Krebs Popper

Our friend Gary loves fishing for snook. His stories make me want to get down to Florida more than ever. Gary fishes his poppers for snook primarily, the occasional tarpon, and of course, being an Indiana guy, plenty of smallmouth.

Gary developed a set of wooden jigs which permit easy, consistent, and precise construction of foam poppers. They are available for sale from River Road Creations. Even if you don’t use Gary’s jigs, the video below has a lot of cool techniques that are applicable when tying many different patterns. Check it out.

Oh, and there’s this little piece of news: we’re finally getting into some salmon. Full report tomorrow.

Krebs Weed Guard

Our friend Gary Krebs was up for a visit last week.  Gary developed a very cool set of popper jigs that are great for tying consistent, effective popper patterns.  We’ll have the full video up tomorrow, but for now check out this short video where Gary demonstrates how he ties his weed guard.  It also makes clear how the angle of your bobbin plane affects the angle of any material you’re tying with.

Oh, and I stuck a salmon in the lower river tonight.  They’re coming in and we’ll have full details later this week.

News Update Friday

  • MidCurrent gets all history-y on us.  Joan Wulff with the first comment to boot.  Pretty cool.
  • Singlebarbed on homemade dubbing blends, too many chioce quotes for one News Update Friday: “you have to make due with Momma’s food processor until she’s spitting guard hairs from a smoothie” or “one of my fur donors had slipped out to lie spread-eagled on the roadbed, and shaved opossum can resemble Siamese if the light is right”.
  • This article from Food and Wine magazine borders on the pretentious, but certainly comes down in favor of Michigan’s great wine country.
  • While all the fancy satellite data says the water off Ludington is still warm, we happen to live here, and we heard there’s cold water pushing up on the pierheads.  And so as you read this, we’re out on the lake, trying to catch the ever elusive fly rod open water salmon.

Muskegon Fishing Report- August 18th

Still no salmon in the PM and trout fishing has been slow. So we drove down to the Muskegon to catch some smallmouth. Didn’t get into any big fish, but pretty consistent action made for a good day. There were trout rising below the bridge at Croton Dam despite bathwater temps. Steve even caught a few smallies on a wiggle minnow pattern he’s been working on for salmon. The weather has finally cooled off and the humidity is gone as well. It’s beautiful here in west Michigan right now.

Pere Marquette salmon: Thundersticks

So now that you’re all prepared for salmon you get the word that they’re in the lower river so you load up the boat and head out on a scouting trip. You dutifully swing flies for a few hours with nothing to show for it. Someone in the boat grabs the spinning rod and runs a big Fire Tiger Thunderstick through the same run you’ve been swinging flies through for twenty minutes and all hell breaks loose. The video below features Kevin, Walt, and Mark fishing the lower river last August. Hopefully we’re shooting this year’s video in a few days. As for the tuna release, they seem to do better that way then by slowly reviving them.
