News Update Friday

  • Keith Barton of Singlebarbed laments the state of fly fishing writing.  He writes: “I welcome each new entrant into my reading itinerary, there’s plenty of lunch hours and ample time to digest each attentively, but I’m still unsatisfied, struggling with what’s missing and it may be nothing at all.”  That’s depressing, but probably true.  There probably just isn’t anything that will make everyone happy forever though we always yearn for such a thing and believe it’s out there.  Though Keith himself is such a good writer with such a unique voice that I’d be happy if more fly fishing writing was like his.
  • Cool underwater pike vid posted over at Pike Fly Fishing.  I’m probably on the lower river as you read this hoping to hook into a few pike and, lord help me, an early salmon.

Michigan oil spill

Saw this on Midcurrent today: 1,000,000 gallons of oil leaked into the Kalamazoo river from a pipeline between Indiana and Canada this past Monday. While the gulf oil spill calamity has been unfolding over the past several months I thought on more than one occasion: glad we don’t have to worry about that in Michigan.

I suppose we should be grateful that at least it isn’t burning.

Photos around Beaver Island

Kevin and Steve send along a couple pictures from Beaver Island. Kevin notes that when you’re in one of the pubs on the island, just ring the brass bell above the bar for faster service. It’s also a great way to make quick friends. Steve’s new boat is really nice. Kind of a bitch to row though. And pirates came and ransacked the apartment.

Guide Series Seal of Disapproval: the Michigan Bull’s Eye

The Great Lake’s Echo, though a fine environmental news source, is also the harbinger of a doom so black that night terrors chase me through my dreams. Asian carp, pharmaceutical and cosmetic waste, quagga mussels, the doughnut bloom, oligotrophication of Lake Michigan.

Child’s play. The PG news.

The Echo brings to our attention an interesting feature on the USGS website: the Tapestry project, a mashup of geological and topographical data shown in map format.

Unfortunately, as you can see, there is a mysterious bull’s eye sitting directly over the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Baldwin appears to be at the epicenter of whatever alien doomsday scenario is about to unfold, which may or may not be a bad thing.

Prepare your bunkers. And fish the Pere Marquette while there’s still time.

Pere Marquette fishing report- July 25th

Ian from Fly Masters, a fantastic fly shop down in Indianapolis, was up our way for a while so we got out mousing on Friday night and Sunday night. Water was up a good bit with some stain on Friday. Water temp was 63 which is quite cold for this time of year. It was 68 in the same spot two weeks ago. Came back up on Sunday night to 67.

The fishing has been very slow during the day. We turned quite a few fish on streamers, but none committed. Hoppers were not fishing well at all. After dark, things have been a bit better. Friday night Ian started rolling fish on a mouse pattern at dusk but it took a while for a fish to commit. But finally, out of the blackness, KERPLOOSH, a big one rolled that mouse and rolled it hard, finally hanging on for a while. It was super foggy on the river which made for slightly tougher rowing and pretty weird photos. We had a bright, nearly full moon on Sunday night and while it is really cool to row down the river under a full moon, the fish don’t seem to like it much.

And check out Fly Master’s webpage. They have a contest going right now. Send in a picture of your Fly Master’s hat in a cool place and if it is deemed the coolest of the cool you get a free, full day guided trip with our very own Steve Martinez on the Pere Marquette river in October. That is a damn fine prize if I do say so myself.

Remember, always click on the pictures to enlarge them. I mean, not only is Ian’s big brown worth a closer look, check out that tight loop…and that mustache.
